If you are a college student pursuing a career in forensic science, the North Carolina State Crime Lab (NCSCL) offers internships at all laboratory locations and in all forensic disciplines.

The internship program runs throughout the year and coincides with university semesters.

  • Internships at the NCSCL are unpaid, and interns are required to provide their own housing and transportation.
  • Interns are required to work a minimum of 20 hours/week during the normal operating hours of the laboratory (8:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday-Friday).
  • Interns are placed in all three laboratories.  However, all disciplines are not available in every laboratory.  Available disciplines are as follows:
    • Raleigh Laboratory:  Toxicology, Drug Chemistry, Trace Evidence, Forensic Biology, Latent Evidence, Firearms, Digital Evidence, Evidence Control
    • Triad Regional Laboratory:  Toxicology, Drug Chemistry, Latent Evidence
    • Western Regional Laboratory:  Toxicology, Drug Chemistry, Latent Evidence, Firearms, Forensic Biology

Candidates applying for an internship with the NCSCL must:

  • Be at least a rising junior in, or graduate of, a four-year degree program
  • Be majoring in a natural science (e.g., chemistry, biology, forensic science) or a computer-related field. We do not accept Criminal Justice majors into the internship program.
  • Successfully pass a background check

Applications must be received by the deadline, not postmarked by the deadline.

  • Spring internships – October 1
  • Summer internships – February 15
  • Fall internships – May 1
