History of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Women's Association (NCLEWA)

The North Carolina Law Enforcement Women's Association (NCLEWA) was established in 1956, originally known as the North Carolina Policewomen's Association (NCPWA). The organization was founded to promote professional development, foster collaboration among women in law enforcement, and elevate the status of female officers across the state. In May 1976, the association officially changed its name to NCLEWA to better reflect its mission and inclusivity.

Since its inception, NCLEWA has been dedicated to providing training, networking opportunities, and recognition for women in law enforcement. The association has hosted annual retraining seminars since its early years, focusing on critical topics such as crime prevention, self-defense, terrorism, domestic violence, and investigative techniques. These seminars have featured expert speakers, hands-on training sessions, and social events to strengthen camaraderie among members.

NCLEWA has also been committed to honoring outstanding contributions within the law enforcement community. The "Law Enforcement Woman of the Year" award was established to recognize exceptional achievements and dedication. Over the years, the association has celebrated the accomplishments of many remarkable women who have made significant impacts in their field.

Membership has grown steadily, with active recruitment efforts to include women from various law enforcement agencies across North Carolina. The association has also introduced initiatives such as the Forgotten Residents Program, scholarships for women pursuing careers in law enforcement, and community service projects to support local causes.

In addition to its training and recognition efforts, NCLEWA has played an active role in shaping law enforcement standards and policies. The association has held positions on the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Education Standards Commission, ensuring that the voices of women in law enforcement are represented in decisions that impact training, certification, and professional development across the state.

NCLEWA continues to evolve, embracing new opportunities for professional growth and community engagement. With a focus on training, recognition, advocacy, and fostering connections, the association remains a vital resource for women in law enforcement, empowering them to excel in their careers and make a difference in their communities.
